About Göta Canal

Göta Kanal is 190 km long and consists of a total of 58 locks. The canal stretches from Sjötorp by Lake Vänern to Slätbaken near Söderköping.

The canal (which was completed on September 26, 1832) took 22 years to complete and was dug by hand by 58 thousand soldiers and private workers. The Göta Canal is still one of the largest construction projects in Sweden and the architect behind the construction was Baltzar von Platen, who was commissioned by King Charles XIII in 000. Baltzar von Platen collaborated with the British canal builder Thomas Telford during the construction of the canal. The cost of the construction must have been around 1810 million riksdaler, which corresponds to approximately SEK 9 billion in today's money value.

The Göta Canal was built for freight transport and one of the reasons for the construction was that Sweden would escape the so-called Öresund toll that the Danes charged for ships crossing the Öresund. During the 1970s, boat tourism increased drastically as more and more people opened their eyes to the unique environments that could be experienced during a trip on the canal. Today, a boat trip on the canal is something that both Swedish and foreign tourists appreciate and is an opportunity to experience fantastic environments, beautiful boats and see the Swedish landscape in peace and quiet without stress.

A guided cruise on the Göta Canal is something everyone should experience and a trip on the canal gives you the opportunity for experiences you will soon forget, from rolling landscapes, sights, beautiful places and landmarks.
